CLASS OF 2019 LEADERSHIP SCHOLARS
Matt Bocketti is a Finance major and Economics minor from Northville, Michigan. He has completed three internships at UBS Financial Services and one at Quicken Loans. On campus he is an active member of the Men’s Club Volleyball team and has held various leadership roles within his fraternity including president. Matt has participated in numerous service projects including outreach efforts through UBS Community Corps and an after-school care program. Upon graduation, he plans to achieve the Certified Financial Planner designation and become a financial advisor.
Luke Cancilla is an Exercise Science major from Erie, PA. Luke is currently a member of the JCU cross country and track teams and has been a 2x All-OAC performer in track.
Zach Chapman is an Economics major from Toledo, OH. He is currently serving as the Vice President of the JCU Labre project, John Carroll’s homeless outreach group. Zach hosts “Thursday Night Throwback” on WJCU 88.7 and is an ambassador for the JCU admissions office as well. Over the summer Zach interned with the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless through the JCU in the City internship program and during the school year Zach will continue interning with Taurus Advisory Group.
Nick Colby is Exercise Science major from Russia, Ohio. At John Carroll, he is a member of the Varsity Track and Field Team and earned All-American honors during the 2018 outdoor season by finishing 6th in the nation in the discus throw. He is also a member of the University Honors Program, a General Chemistry Laboratory Teaching Assistant, and participates in service opportunities, such as CSSA weekly service and immersion experiences. After graduating from JCU, Nick hopes to acquire a Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree.
Emily Ellis is a Biochemistry major with a Leadership Development minor from Canfield, OH. She is a member of the Pre-Health Club and Pre-Med Club, as well as an executive board member of Seeds of Hope. For the past two years she has been a member of Dr. Bruce’s computational chemistry research lab. This past year, Emily served as a peer mentor for Choose Ohio First at John Carroll. Following her four years at John Carroll, Emily hopes to attend medical school.
Elizabeth Evankovich is an Accountancy Major from Pittsburgh. She serves as President of the Institute of Management Accountants and is an active member of Kappa Alpha Theta and the Honors Program. In addition, Liz will be a Manresa Team Leader for M37 and will be participating in an immersion in Jamaica this upcoming January. In her free time, Liz enjoys volunteering and singing at mass. Liz looks forward to beginning her career at Ernst & Young next fall.
Nathaniel Fuller is a Marketing major from Pittsburgh, PA. While at John Carroll, Nate has had the opportunity to work and learn in a variety of sectors, from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. On campus, He is member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and volunteers his time in many ways to better the John Carroll Community. He is an Eagle Scout, and art/music enthusiast. Moving forward, he hopes to work in the entertainment industry as a marketing specialist.
Marissa Golem is studying Early Childhood Education and attended Padua Franciscan High School in Parma, OH. She is a previous member of the JCU Women’s Soccer team and has volunteered in various settings involving children such as supervising after-school care, coaching sports teams, and assisting handicapped children at various events and fundraisers. She has spent summers working as a sports camp leader for the children’s programs at the YMCA, a nanny and a t-ball coach. Marissa has previously participated in a service mission through the Caminante Educational Project, traveling to the Dominican Republic to teach Haitian children. She loves working with children and plans to be a kindergarten teacher after graduation.
Alexis Guage is an Integrated Marketing and Communications major and an Italian minor from Rochester, NY. She is a member of the women’s lacrosse team here at John Carroll. Upon graduating, she hopes to continue her job full-time in the marketing department at Sherwin-Williams.
Jacob Haas is a Computer Science major with a Leadership Development minor from Westlake, OH. During his time at John Carroll he has been lucky to learn a ton of useful information which have helped him get internships and Co-ops. Jacob enjoys working out, camping, kayaking, and being around animals.
Devvin La Barge is a Biology major from Pittsburgh, PA. She is serving as a third year resident assistant in Murphy Hall, and is the President of Women’s Club Basketball. In addition, she works as a Peer Mentor for the Office of CSDI, serves as the student body representative for the University Committee of Student Retention and Learning, and has a job as a Behavioral Therapists for Children with Autism at Building Blocks Therapy. Devvin hopes to enroll in a Masters in Physician Assistant studies program after graduation.
Kristina Lustri is a Biology major from Waite Hill, OH. At JCU, Kristina participates in Stargazing Club, Home Buddies, Fantasy Gaming Club, Carroll Cinema Society, and the Pre-Health club. In Kristina’s spare time, she tutors and socializes with her friends. She rarely misses a day of fitness, participating in the Zumba classes or just working out at the gym. In the summer she volunteers at medical offices, and has served as a SWAT leader for the past three years. Kristina plans on pursuing a career in health care.
Katie O’Connell is a Communication major on the Integrated Marketing track with an Entrepreneurship minor from La Grange, IL. She has been a mentor with Seeds of Hope during her four years at John Carroll and served as a campus tour guide for three years. Katie is curious about leadership in startups and excited to see where this curiosity will take her in her senior year.
Nicholas Reis is a Management major and Leadership Development minor from Ste. Marie, IL. Nicholas is active with Intramurals and the Investment Club and helped organize the inaugural Military Appreciation Day with the JCU football team. This past summer he completed an Internship with Techtronic Industries serving as a Sales and Marketing Intern for the company’s Cleveland territory.
Connor Robinson is a Communication major with a focus in Integrated Marketing from Mentor,
OH. Connor participated in the Jamaica immersion and will be leading the same immersion in January of 2019. Connor has also been a member of the varsity football team, serving as a member of the leadership council in both his junior and senior seasons. Connor interned this past summer at Sherwin-Williams in their marketing communications department.
Jerry Rostocil is a Sociology major with a concentration in Criminology and Forensic Science and a Leadership Development minor from Eastlake, OH. Jerry is a Student Manager for the JCU football team and helps with spring sports as well. Jerry also works with the Information Technology department and previously served as Vice President of the Resident Hall Association. Outside of school, Jerry enjoys working security for the Cleveland Indians.
Julia Ruggiero is studying Integrated Marketing and Communications with a minor in Leadership Development from Pittsburgh PA. Julia works on campus as a recreation desk employee and also created her own brand of essential oils, Campus Oils, where she teaches people around the world how these oils can benefit health and wellness. Julia also started the #vulnerABLEmovement to give people who struggle with mental illness a platform to share their story and what they do in their lives to overcome struggles. She loves speaking with students about the possibilities of entrepreneurship, the power of social media, as well as various health and wellness topics.
Amanda Smigel is a Child and Family Studies Psychology major from Kent, OH. On campus, she is a member of Chi Omega Fraternity, the Honors Program, works at the campus Rec Desk, and is also involved in Campus Ministry by cantoring at mass every Sunday. Following graduation, she plans to pursue a career as a Child Life Specialist.
Haley Vinborg is a Marketing major and Leadership Development minor from Mentor, OH. Outside the classroom at JCU, Haley is a member of the women’s soccer team and volunteers on and off campus, helping others around the Cleveland area. Haley’s dream job is to be head of the marketing department for a Cleveland sports team.
CLASS OF 2020 LEADERSHIP SCHOLARS
Chloe Backman is an Education major and Leadership Development minor from Broadview Heights, OH. Chloe is the Director of Campus Activities in her sorority, Chi Omega, where she participates in events that help with their philanthropy- Make a Wish. She works as a babysitter outside of campus and is also scorekeeper for Intramural Sports. She is an oboist in JCU’s wind ensemble program as she has been playing the instrument for the past 11 years. For the past few summers, Chloe has worked as a camp counselor in her hometown and led kids through different activities. Chloe plans on becoming an early childhood education educator after she graduates.
Maria Borowy is an Integrated Marketing Communications major with a Leadership Development minor from Erie, PA. Maria just completed a Marketing and Production internship with Erie Arts and Culture where she had the opportunity to take part in the marketing team and help lead the execution of the Erie Blues and Jazz Festival. On campus, she is a sister of the Kappa Alpha
Theta fraternity where she participates in events that help to support their philanthropy- CASA.
She is also a member of the Leadership Scholars Social Committee. Maria pursues her passions of service and leadership through activities like Danie’s Day, the JCU Labre Project, and has served as a SWAT leader. She is also an employee at the University Bookstore.
Jessica DiSalvatore is pursuing an English Creative Writing major and a minor in Communications from Ashtabula, OH. She is a member of the English Department Undergraduate Advisory Council and has served as both financial officer and secretary of the JCU English Club. She has also participated in Campus Ministry retreats and is considering obtaining her MFA after college, eventually becoming a published novelist. Outside of John Carroll, she currently writes articles for Silverleaf Corner, a WordPress website.
Mae Eddir is a Biochemistry major with a minor in English, pursuing the medical school track from Strongsville, OH She is currently training captain of JCU EMS and is a member of the Pre-med Club. Mae is a devoted volunteer at her local library and at Southwest General Hospital and also serves as teaching assistant for the general chemistry lab this year. After graduating from John Carroll, Mae hopes to go to medical school and become a doctor.
Matt Ferraro is a double major in Business Marketing & Supply Chain Management/ Business Logistics with a minor in Leadership Development from Elburn, IL. Matt is on the JCU wrestling team, served as a SWAT Leader, and as a Boler College of Business Ambassador.
Marissa George is a Cell and Molecular Biology major with a minor in Leadership Development from Medina, OH, with the hopes of attending medical school after graduation to pursue a career in Native American healthcare. She currently serves at the Chief Executive Officer of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, and as the student director of the Honor’s Mentorship Program. Marissa also participates in a variety of service events on and off campus, including immersion trips, and loves working at the Center for Career Services and with the Office of Admissions on events for prospective students.
Vinnie Giovannitti is a Spanish major with minors in Biochemistry and Leadership Development from Pittsburgh, PA. He also is a member of the honors program and plans on attending Dental School after graduation to become an orthodontist. On campus Vinnie was a Resident Assistant for Campion Hall and Social Chairman and Finance Chairman of the Honors Student Association. Vinnie has participated in service on and off campus, including the afterschool program at the Fatima Family Center Boys and Girls Club in Cleveland and an immersion trip in Ecuador, while also leading the Louisville Immersion. Vinnie will be studying abroad in Southeastern Spain this fall.
Michelle Glawitsch s a biochemistry major from Madison, OH. She is a part of CRU, the Creative Arts Club, and the Little Theatre society. Michelle also volunteers to tutor high school students in the Cleveland Hts – University Hts Options Program. Michelle also enjoys reading books, playing video games, and noodling on the piano.
Matthew Hallgarth is an International Business major with an intended minor in Spanish from Hudson, OH. He is currently a part of the Honors Program and Carroll Faith Communities, as well as a member of the Cross Country and Track teams.
Christian Hipsher is a Marketing and Supply Chain management double major. This summer he interned at Union Home Mortgage as an appraisal specialist, and this fall he is interning at City Barbeque as a Market Analyst. He is a member of the Varsity Wrestling team. In High School, he became an Eagle Scout.
Karlie Kehoe is an Exercise Science major with a minor in Leadership Development minor from Keller, Texas. On campus, she is an active member of Chi Omega and is also in the Pre-Health club. During her time at John Carroll, she has become very involved in numerous service activities working with the children and young adults of the Cleveland community. In the future, she plans to work closely with sports organizations as a Physical Therapist, where she can utilize her leadership and physiological skills in a clinical setting.
Kody Kidd is majoring in sports studies with a minor in Leadership Development from Richmond, KY. Kody is currently a member of FCA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the JCU Football team, in addition to serving as a tour guide.
Tomi Korsa is an Exercise Science Major and Leadership Development Minor from Concord, OH. Tomi is on the John Carroll Men’s Soccer Team and also works in the Campus Ministry office at JCU.
Mitch Kotheimer is a Finance major and Leadership Development minor from Chesterland, OH. At John Carroll, Mitch is a member of the men’s soccer team. During the past semester, he spent time in London and various parts of Europe, studying abroad. He recently completed a summer internship at Park Place Technologies, contacting high level executives, managing accounts, and learning about hardware maintenance. Mitch enjoys participating in John Carroll University men’s soccer annual autism clinic.
Olivia Krause is an Accounting and Finance major from Wexford, PA. She is currently serving as Vice President of Finance of Kappa Delta Sorority here at John Carroll. Outside of class Olivia works at Grasselli Library as a Library Student Assistant.
Noah Paulsen is an International Business with Language and Culture major from Brecksville, Ohio. On campus, he’s a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity (serving on their Administration Board), a member of the IBLC Association (serving as VP of Marketing), and a staff photographer and occasional writer for the Carroll News. In Fall 2019, Noah will be completing a study abroad in Madrid, Spain at Universidad Pontifica de Comillas.
Arika Quinones is a Biology major from Cleveland, OH. She is interested in going into
the medical field. Arika works in the research lab under the supervision of Dr. Drenovsky in the biology department. She enjoys reading books, hanging with friends, and working as a pharmacy technician.
Maureen (Mo) Reilly is majoring in Classical Studies and double minoring in Biology and History from Cincinnati, OH. She is a member of the JCU Club Rowing Team and Honors Program, as well as an Orientation Leader and Tour Guide on campus. She also likes to stay busy by serving as representative on the University Sustainability Committee and as a co-mentor for a freshman Honors advising cohort. After studying abroad in Galway, Ireland for the spring of 2018, she is excited to be back on campus and can’t wait to see what the future has in store.
Olivia Shackleton is a Communication and Political Science double major. During her time at Carroll, Olivia has been very active on campus by getting involved in several different organizations, such as theatre, WJCU, the Society of Professional Journalists, Carroll Faith Communities, and Blue Streak Ambassadors. Olivia’s favorite activity on campus is The Carroll News, where she serves as Editor-in-Chief. In the future, Olivia hopes to become a political journalist.
Morgen Staggers is majoring in Human Resources and Business Management with a minor in Leadership Development. She is a Boler Ambassador on campus, where she advocates for the school’s business college and support incoming students with the decision to choose Boler. Morgen is also a Senior Resident Assistant on campus in charge of Dolan residence hall. She just finished her second HR internship and plans on pursuing another internship in the near future.
Elizabeth Watson is an English Literature major from Allison Park, PA. Elizabeth is a student in the JCU Honors Program, and she has participated in four theatrical productions on the stages of John Carroll. Elizabeth enjoys working with children at her part-time job at Build-a-Bear Workshop. Last year, she served as the Vice President of the Little Theatre Society and helped lead students in a petition to preserve the presence of theatre arts on campus.
Julie Whitmore is a junior studying political science with a minor in entrepreneurship from Cleveland, OH. On campus she is the co-president of Students for Social Justice Club and also Students Empowering Women/Take Back the Night. Julie has participated in an immersion experience to Nicaragua and service projects like L’Arche. She looks forward to exploring more of the programs and service events on campus during her junior year.
CLASS OF 2021 LEADERSHIP SCHOLARS
Brianna Boyko is a Psychology major and Biology minor from Brecksville, OH. When she is not volunteering or performing she spends her time working as a lifeguard during the summer. At JCU, Brianna participates in intramural volleyball and theater. After college, Brianna hopes to
continue her passion for helping others as an occupational therapist.
Delaney Burns is an Undecided major from Columbus, OH, with plans to pursue a degree in Communications with a minor in Peace, Justice and Human Rights. Delaney worked in the Center for Service and Social Action as a student liaison, was in a Carroll Faith Community, and was a part of Students for Social Justice. She is excited for her new role as the immersion intern in Campus Ministry and serve as a student ambassador for Catholic Relief Services.
Michael Butler is a sociology/Criminal Justice major from Valley City, OH. Off campus, he works for the Coca-Cola corporation and is planning on becoming a Cleveland Police officer like his father.
Kaley Capron is a Psychology major with minors in Statistics and Leadership Development from Cuyahoga Falls, OH. In addition to her involvement with Campus Ministry, Kaley is also one of the captains on the JCU Cheerleading squad this year and hopes everyone can make it out to a game to support our Streaks! Kaley hopes to go to graduate school to become a clinical psychologist upon graduation.
Isabella Carlozzi is a sophomore Biology major with desired minors in Leadership Development and Chemistry from Chardon, OH. She is member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, where she serves as the Facility Management Director. Bella enjoys engaging in service opportunities at JCU and hopes to follow in the footsteps of her father in pursuing her passion for oral surgery.
Joe Clark is an English and Education major with a minor in Leadership Development from Rocky River, OH. On campus, Clark is involved with service opportunities, the
Student Union Programming Board, being a lector at Masses, intramural sports, and is a
Resident Assistant (RA). After graduation, Joe plans to pursue graduate studies in order to obtain a position that allows him to work hand-in-hand with people.
Charlie Cook is a Finance major and Leadership Development minor from East Aurora, NY. Outside of the classroom, Charlie is a member of the Finance Club and intends to earn his MBA upon his graduation from JCU.
Kara Daggett is an Early Childhood Education major and is hoping to minor in Spanish. At John
Carroll she is involved in Greek life and would like to get more involved in the various service
opportunities that John Carroll has to offer.
Reade DeRosa is an undecided Business major with plans to minor in Leadership Development from Pittsburgh, PA.
Sara Domino is an Exercise Science major with a Spanish minor from Mentor, OH. Last year
she played on the John Carroll Women’s Club Volleyball team last year, volunteered for various
on campus events such as Through the Eyes of a Child, and volunteered with University
Hospitals. In the future, Sara hopes to be a pediatric speech therapist.
Megan Dugan is an Accountancy major from Erie, PA. She is actively involved in the Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity and the Student Alumni Association. She enjoys being a part of various campus organizations, working on campus, and volunteering for Rallycap Sports. She is anticipating studying abroad during her time at JCU.
Madison Eagle is an Exercise Science major from Columbus, OH. At JCU, Madison serves as an RA, is a member of
the varsity softball team, works for the athletic department, is nvolved in a Carroll Faith Community, and is a member of
Adam Haas is a Business Management major from Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Adam plays varsity soccer at JCU and is looking to get involved in other clubs and communities around campus. He has been a Project Management intern for Sensical Inc. in Solon Ohio from May 2016-Present.
Ayoub Harb is a Cell and Molecular Biology major with minors in Chemistry and Leadership Development from Parma, OH. Ayoub serves as the president of the Middle Eastern Student Association, is a member of the Leadership Scholar Social Committee, and sings in the Chapel Ensemble at Mass on Sunday nights. Ayoub was also an Orientation Leader and conducts research in the Biology Department. Following graduation, Ayoub plans to attend medical school to become a neurologist.
Elizabeth Hughes is a Marketing major with minors in Leadership Development and Italian
Studies from Orchard Park, NY. Elizabeth played on the John Carroll Women’s Club Basketball as well as working in the athletic equipment room during athletic contests. Elizabeth is traveling abroad in the 2018 fall semester in Rome, Italy. After graduating from John Carroll, Elizabeth plans on being successful somewhere in the business world.
Jared Ianiro is a Business Management and Human Resources major and Leadership Development minor from Kirtland, OH. He plays soccer for John Carroll University and volunteers with the Keira Kilbane Foundation. He is planning on studying abroad in the spring of 2019.
Morgan Jochum is an Integrated Marketing Communications major, Leadership and
Entrepreneurship minor from Mayfield Village, OH. On campus, she is a member of Chi
Omega, Love Your Melon Campus Crew, and is in the process of bringing a running club to
campus this coming fall.
Alexa Lowe is a Biology major from Pittsburgh, PA. Dance has always been a huge part of her life and continues her passion as a member dance ensemble at JCU. During the past year Alexa has had the privilege of becoming a representative for the Headbands of Hope organization and hopes to start a club for it at John Carroll. Alexa wishes to stay involved at John Carroll and plans to engage in many volunteer activities to help better the JCU community. After John Carroll, Alexa plans to go to medical school to become a pediatric oncologist.
Morgan Lupica is an Accountancy major with a minor in Leadership Development from Cleveland, OH. She has been figure skating since she was young, competing both locally and
nationally. Her love and devotion to the sport has enabled her to share her talent by teaching
young skaters both in groups and private lessons.
Haylee Mathews is a Human Resources and Management major with a double minor in Leadership Development and Population and Public Health from Cortland, OH. She is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority as well as the Social Chair of Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity. Haylee is also part of many volunteer activities on John Carroll’s campus including, Carroll Reads. After graduation she plans on pursuing a career as a Healthcare Administrator.
Chase Mieras is a Computer Science major with minors in Leadership Development and Data
Science from Lorain, OH. He is a Fourth Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus, and is the Advocate for JCU’s college council. Chase is also the Pep Band’s Scheduling Officer and plays the trumpet with Wind Ensemble and Pep Band. He is also a cantor for the Masses at St. Francis’ Chapel. Chase also plans to work with Information Technology or as a Computer Science TA.
Andrew Miner is a double major in Finance and Economics from Eldersburg, MD. Andrew runs cross-country and track for John Carroll University, specializing in distance events.
Gabriella Morton is a Political Science major and Leadership Development minor from Pittsburgh, PA, is working towards She served as a Blue Streak Ambassador, helping out with various admissions events for prospective students, also participated in the Pre-Law Society Gabriella plans to attend law school after graduation.
John Moynihan is a Biology major and Leadership Development minor from Cleveland, OH. John is Co-President of the JCU Club Volleyball team, treasurer of the Health Awareness Project, and member of the Labre program. John is also a lead dancer with the Lucina Slovak ethnic dance ensemble, and member of many fraternal organizations. John plans on attending medical school after graduation with the intentions of becoming a doctor.
Mary Nofsinger is a Biology and Spanish double major from Pittsburgh, PA. She is a proud member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and works for the Intramural Department on campus as both a referee and a scorekeeper. Mary is a passionate member of her community who participates in service such as the JCU Labre Project.
Evan Norris is a Business Management major with minors in Entrepreneurship and Leadership Development minor from Canton, OH. Evan is a part of the John Carroll men’s golf team and a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, where he partakes in many philanthropy
activities in the University Heights community. Evan was also a part of the Labre Project at John
Carroll, where students travel the city of Cleveland with hopes to help the homeless.
Joey Parker is a Marketing major with minors in Entrepreneurship and Leadership from Mayville, NY. He is an Orientation Leader, a member of Student Union Programming Board, loves intramural football, and enjoys campus retreats.
Rushil Rana is a Finance major with a minor in Leadership Development from Tiffin, OH. Rushil participates in various service projects, is an active member of various clubs, as well as being part of the Rowing team. He hopes to pursue his dreams of working in the hospitality.
Alexander Reyes is a Finance and Economics double major with a minor in Leadership Development from Maumee, OH. Alex worked on campus at the Student Call Center and was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity. Alex also helped reach out to prospective students through the Blue Streak Ambassadors program and is a member of the Honors Program on campus as well.
Landon Rhoads is a Communications major and Leadership Development minor from Yellow Springs, OH with the hopes of eventually become a sports broadcaster. Landon plays intramural soccer and is also very interested in documentaries and music, enjoying the production of his own in his free time.
Isabelle Rizzo is an Accountancy major with minors in Leadership Development and Catholic Studies from Cuyahoga Falls, OH. On campus, Isabelle won the First Year Writing Award and serves as the Public Relations Chairwoman for the all-female a Capella group “The Sweet Carrolines”. She is also involved in Carroll Faith Communities and attended the March for Life 2018 in Washington, D.C. Isabelle also works as an office assistant in the Philosophy
AJ Rowe is a Communications and English double major from Detroit, Michigan. For three summers now, he has worked as a summer day camp counsellor for the Salvation Army. AJ plans to use his degree to get involved in film production and directing.
Maria Sagi is an Accountancy major from Independence, OH. Maria runs on the Cross Country
and Track and Field teams and also works at the Student Call Center. She also tutored middle school students and plans on becoming a CPA and pursuing her MBA upon graduating.
Rachael Sanford is a Biology major with a Leadership Development minor from Erie, PA. She is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta fraternity and loves supporting their philanthropy, CASA. Rachael is also part of the LECOM 4+4 Program, is an aspiring physician, and is a member of both the Pre-medicine and Pre-health clubs.
Hope Scherger is a biochemistry major from Round Rock, Texas. At JCU, Hope is a member of the honors program, serving as an honors mentor, and is a member of the varsity swim team. She is also a member of the women’s fraternity Kappa Kappa Gamma in which she serves on the executive board as Marshall.
Gabrielle Sergi is an Integrated Marketing Communications with a Leadership Development minor from Erie, PA. She spends most of her time with arts such as painting, photography, and music. Gabi is a member of the Sailing Club team, became a lifeguard on campus, and also participated in the Immersion program to the US-Mexico Border.
Tori Vale is an Exercise Science major from Denver, Colorado. She is also a member
of the JCU swim team and looks forward to continuing her community service involvement.
Alliha Valentine is a Psychology major with a minor in Leadership Development from Pittsburgh, PA. She spends her free time dabbling in a multitude of things like cosmetic arts, watching Friends, or stopping to meet the neighborhood dogs. Alliha is also the Secretary and Treasurer of the Psychology Club and works three jobs. She hopes to move south after graduating from JCU to pursue a counseling career.

Emma Abfall is a Psychology and Exercise Science major from Avon, OH. In high school, Emma was a member of National Honors Society, captain of the Varsity Volleyball Team, Vice
President of the S.A.D.D. Club, and captain of her CYO Basketball team all throughout high school. She has been an active member of the community and her church, St. Mary’s. She has been a lifeguard every summer for the past three years and has worked at Barry’s Bagels and Tom’s Country Place as a server. At John Carroll Emma will be a part of the Varsity Volleyball
team and hopes to go on an immersion trip or two.
Machayla Adams is a Biochemistry major from Willoughby, OH. In high school, Machayla participated in Drama Club and ran varsity track for three years. Machayla helped the creative director build the sets for the winter and spring production. She also participated in volunteer club. These activities included preparing and serving breakfast for the senior citizens and running the elementary school carnival. Machayla hopes to join intramural sports, service opportunities, and theater.
Nour Altabbaa is a Biology major from Westlake, OH. In high school, she was a College Credit Plus student and was also part of National Honors Society, which gave her the opportunity to volunteer in many different places and allowed her to gain a sense of community. Outside of school Nour volunteered at the Westlake Library and was a teacher assistant at Al-Omary Saturday School. She is looking forward to all the volunteering opportunities that John Carroll University has to offer and her ultimate goal is to make a difference and to help the people around her.
Katherine Arnold is an Accountancy and Finance major with minors in Actuarial Science and Leadership Development from Columbus, OH. While in high school she was the leader for the lights crew in the drama department and a founder of the school’s diversity club. Her favorite service organization that she was involved in was Miracle League; where you help kids with disabilities play baseball. While at JCU, Katherine plans on continuing her commitment service.
Zach Barther is a Biology major from Parma, OH. In high school, Zach was involved in varsity football, baseball, and tennis as well as National Honor Society, Student Council, and Ambassador’s Club. He also participated in the MedTrack program at Padua. Zach plans to pursue his healthcare goals as a participant in the Pre- Health Professions Program at John Carroll University as well as continuing his athletic career as a member of the varsity football team.
Carlo Bertoni is a Supply Chain Management and Marketing major from Pittsburgh, PA. At Central Catholic High School, Carlo was involved in the My Brother’s Keeper program where he
mentored incoming freshman and was a member of the Future Business Leaders of America. He
also played varsity hockey throughout his four years at Central Catholic and was assistant
captain his senior year. Outside of school Carlo played travel hockey, is a Learn to Skate
instructor, and is a volunteer for the Mighty Penguins Sled Hockey Team. Carlo works at the
UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex and has a small landscaping business. He intends to continue
playing hockey for John Carroll and volunteer within the community.
Zachary Braun is an Accountancy major from Orchard Park, NY. In high school he
played lacrosse and hockey and served as a captain in both sports. Each summer he
volunteers for the local KIA March honoring the fallen veterans of Western NY. Zachary will be on the JCU lacrosse team and after graduation he plans on either getting his CPA for accounting and going to law school, or joining the United States Secret Service and follow in his father’s footsteps.
Kenadee Bryant is a Political Science major with minors in Leadership Development and History from Elyria, OH. In high school she participated in Students Against Destructive Decisions, Culture Conspiracy, and served as Vice President of the Model United Nations. She was also a member of the National Honors Society, and participated in varsity basketball. In her free time she enjoys volunteering, reading, and spending time with friends and family.
Cassandra Calamunci is a Business major from Sylvania, OH. At Notre Dame Academy, she played volleyball as a year-round pursuit, playing both indoor and beach volleyball. She looks forward to continuing her passion on the JCU volleyball court. High school provided many service opportunities, most meaningful of which was a trip to Appalachia. Cassandra anticipates continuing her dedication to service by participating in various Campus Ministry offerings at JCU.
Dominic Cipriano is a Supply Chain Management and Marketing major from Claymont, DE. Throughout high school he participated in Football and Lacrosse, earning multiple All-Conference awards in both. He was also a club officer in his school’s Pro-Life club and coached lacrosse with grade-schoolers in the summers. He will continue to play football and lacrosse for JCU, and also plans on being involved with campus ministry.
Elsie Connell is a Political Science major with a Leadership Development minor from Oak Park, IL. In high school she was a four-year varsity swimmer as well as serving as captain her senior
year. Outside of class, Elsie will swim for John Carroll’s swim team and intends to sail for the club team. She loves to participate in clubs and service, both of which she hopes to continue in college.
Madi Daube is a Marketing major with a minor in Leadership Development from Granville, OH.
In high school, Madi played volleyball, participated in the Global Scholars Program, and worked as a waitress at the local nursing facility. She also served as Director of Communications for Spanish Club and was a camp counselor for Volleyball Kid Camp. Madi hopes to study abroad during her time at JCU.
Mary DiDonato is a double major in Supply Chain Management and Marketing with a minor in Leadership Development from Pittsburgh, PA. During her high school career, Mary was a
member of the Varsity Soccer and Lacrosse teams, for which she was selected to be a team co-captain. Mary also received the Joan of Arc Medallion Award for completing over 150 hours of community service during her high school years, centered on helping local Catholic parishes with their Bible Schools. She also has an interest in the theatre and enjoyed managing the school’s stage crew for four of the school’s productions. Mary plans to continue service work throughout her time at John Carroll and is open to trying new things.
Nick Falbo is an Engineering Physics major from Grand Island, NY. In high school, he was a large part of the sports culture whether it was on the field or in the student section. Nick was also part of the arts program as well in the concert choir and served as a leader of the Kairos retreat, was named baseball captain, and served as a co-leader on a month-long food drive campaign. Nick intends to continue his baseball career at John Carroll and has hopes of becoming a Civil Engineer.
Brian Farrell is a Business Management Major and a Theatre Minor from Middletown, CT. Brian enjoys running and being active in his parish as a cantor, lector, and Eucharistic minister. In high school he was heavily involved in his school’s Theatre Program, participating in eight performances and his school’s chapter of the International Thespian Society, a society that recognizes achievement and excellence in Theatre. Brian was also a part of his High School Peer Ministry team, and Student Advisory Council. He hopes to attend Law School after his years at John Carroll.
Brady Fields is a Marketing major from Lake Geneva, WI. In high school, Brady participated in varsity athletics, DECA Business Club, National Honors Society, Economics Club, and more. Brady has participated in a number of volunteer opportunities which include visiting Lake Geneva Manor, a retirement home facility; setting up Irish Fest, a local religious brunch event; and also creating his own service project by raising money to shop for holiday items for
families in need. He is very excited to be able to connect with others and serve the local community and will be playing baseball at JCU.
Zach Gerber is from Aurora, OH and will major in either Finance or Economics. While in high school, Zach participated in Student Council, NHS, Student Senate, and track and field. He will also be continuing his track career at JCU and is very excited to see what the future holds!
Bobby Goff is a Marketing major from Lyndhurst, OH. Outside of the classroom, he is an intramural sports referee and enjoys playing pick-up basketball in the Rec Center. Bobby is getting involved in Campus Ministry through various service opportunities and hopes to acquire a job as a sales rep for a local Cleveland company.
Savannah Grandovic is an English major on the pre-med track from Pittsburgh, PA. While in high school, Savannah was a member of the National Honors Society, Global Scholars, French club, and Drama club where she performed in ten productions. Savannah also dedicated her time volunteering at her high school library, World Vision, and weeding and planting senior citizens gardens. During her senior year, Savannah started a project called Savvy Headbands where she hand-knit headbands for women with cancer. Savannah hopes to continue her Savvy Headbands at John Carroll University. When Savannah is not volunteering or knitting, she spends most of her time working with the Garden Girls, a landscaping business she started with her mother when she was eight years old. Savannah’s ultimate goal is to attend medical school after graduation and become a forensic pathologist.
Reilly Haas is a Sports Studies major from Cincinnati, OH. During high school she was a four-year member of her school’s cross country and basketball teams, even winning the 2017 OHSAA Division I State title! Reilly was captain of both teams her senior year. She was involved in campus ministry for four years and served as President of the Worship Commission her senior year. Reilly also served as a retreat leader and was involved in peer ministry. Reilly’s desire to serve others will keep her involved in service and Campus Ministry at JCU. She is eager to try new clubs and sports and is excited to experience all JCU has to offer.
Jared Hinton is an Economics major from North Ridgeville, OH. While in high school, he was a two-year varsity letterman in football as well as an active member of Key-club, debate club, Varsity R, and National Honors Society. At John Carroll University Jared hopes to find his passion in the business field; however, he also has a strong interest in medicine. He is very excited to become a Blue Steak and engage with the John Carroll community through clubs and intramural sports.
Spencer Hood is a Finance major with a Political Science minor from Sylvania, OH. He is an avid
golfer, and has been a member of the Toledo Junior Golf Association since the sixth grade, and
was last year’s recipient of the “Dr. Ed Jacob Memorial Scholarship” from the TJGA. He was a
member of high school golf team throughout all four years of high school as well as the hockey team. He campaigned for both Senator Rob Portman and State Representative Derrick Merrin during the last presidential election. Spencer has dedicated time to volunteering for the “Gliding Stars”, an organization that teaches children with disabilities how to ice skate, and Kingston Residence, an elderly residential home.
Miranda Keck is a Journalism major from North Jackson, OH. During her time in high school, she was a member of NHS, Link Crew, Youth Leadership Mahoning Valley, Interact Club, and varsity tennis. She also carries heavy involvement in Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY), serving as both an ambassador and Program Operations director. She is looking forward to continuing her involvement in a variety of ways at JCU.
Kaeleigh Kirkwood is a Biology major and Leadership Development minor from South Carolina via Buffalo, NY. While in South Carolina, she swam on her school’s varsity swim team, winning the state championships in 2013. Along with her swimming career, she worked as a research assistant at both the Medical University of South Carolina, and the University at Buffalo where she was co-authored on an academic paper in Nature’s Scientific Reports. Kaeleigh hopes to continue her research at John Carroll while on a pre-dental track.
Jasmine McCallum is a Psychology major and Business and Leadership Development minor
from Rochester, NY. During high school, Jasmine was involved in Link Crew as a commissioner, founded a diversity club, and was an active participant in the theater department, both on stage and off. At Webster Presbyterian Church, she was a Youth Elder on session, volunteer at Vacation Bible School, and an active member of the youth group. At John Carroll University, Jasmine plans on participating in clubs in organizations that can further develop her leadership potential.
Jasmine Milton is an Undecided major from Cleveland, OH. In high school she was a part of the marching band, jazz band, National Honor Society, cheerleading squad, and volleyball team. Jasmine worked several jobs throughout high school including McDonalds, Cinemark Movie Theatre, and the YMCA as a lifeguard and swim instructor. Outside of school she volunteered at the Cleveland Foodbank, The Ronald McDonald House preparing meals for the families that stayed there, as well as helping at local churches serving meals to those in need. Jasmine hopes to continue with community service and leadership at John Carroll.
Benjamin Nist is an Accountancy and Finance major from North Canton, OH. Throughout his school year, he participated in many activities including various sports, volunteering at the Refuge of Hope, being an altar server and lector, teaching Sunday school, Boy Scouts, and karate. Benjamin participated in National Youth Leadership Training in 2013 and was a staff member for the course the following three years. After graduation, Benjamin will either sit for the CPA exam or attend law school.
Hailey Rozanski is a a Marketing major from Buffalo, NY. While in high school she participated in several organizations including; Symphonic Orchestra, Guitar Club, Leadership Academy, National Honors Society and NAF Business Academy of Finance and played high school field hockey and lacrosse. She has also served as the Interact Club President. Hailey has also been continuously employed throughout high school, working as a ski instructor, intern for the Clarence Chamber of Commerce, a cashier at a local grocery store, and a waitress for an area retirement home. While attending John Carroll, Hailey hopes to study abroad, join the crew team, participate in Greek Life, and explore many of the various social groups offered by JCU.
Sarah Sahlani is an Accounting and Finance major from Willoughby Hills, OH. During high school, Sarah was a four -ear varsity letter winner in Soccer and Track and Field, and she was also team captain in both sports her senior year. Sarah was student council president, a member of National Honor Society, and was awarded the Sisters of Notre Dame Distinguished Scholar Award her senior year. At John Carroll, Sarah plans to continue playing soccer and get involved in other areas as much as she can.
Jonathan Sandstrom is a Psychology major with a concentration in Child/Family Studies from Jamestown, NY. In high school, he was an active member of Student Government, participated in the Marching and Concert Bands, and played Varsity Baseball. Jon spent time volunteering at an elementary school After School Program and as a youth baseball coach. He is excited about the endless opportunities JCU offers and hopes to eventually become a Clinical Child Psychologist.
Garrett Siegel is a Sports Studies and Finance major from Ipswich, MA. In high school, he was a member of the National Honor Society, baseball team, and was active in service in his school and church community. At John Carroll he will be on the baseball team, work for the Sports Information department, and hopes to be an orientation leader as well as doing other service work through John Carroll around the city of Cleveland.
Trey Smith is an Economics major from Cincinnati, OH. In high school he was a team captain and all state athlete in both basketball and baseball. He will continue to play baseball at John Carroll and is excited to get involved in many things at JCU.
Rory Vigrass is an Exercise Science major from Pittsburgh, PA. In high school, she was a captain of the Cross Country and Track and Field teams, where she lettered all four years. Additionally, she was an active member of the Latin club and enjoys coaching youth sports. At John Carroll she will continue her athletic career with Cross Country and Track with the hope of going to chiropractic school
Michael Volpe is a Business major from University Heights, OH. In high school, he was a part of multiple clubs and sports teams, including Support our Troops, Ignatians for Life, Football, and Rugby. At John Carroll he looks forward to continue to be a part of the same clubs and plans to continue Rugby at Carroll. Michael enjoys going out with friends and going downtown to watch the Tribe and the Browns.
Hannah Wells is an Undecided major from Lyndhurst, OH. In high school, Hannah invested most of her time in Student Council, NHS, and the Ambassador’s Club. She also enjoyed being a member and later captain of her high school soccer team. At JCU, Hannah hopes to get involved with John Carroll’s intramural sports, service trips, and Greek life.
Sarah Wells is an Undecided major from Lyndhurst, OH. In high school, Sarah was heavily involved with student government as an executive student council member for two years. She also participated in the studio art program as well as the National Honors Society and Academic Scholars Program. At JCU, Sarah is looking forward to getting involved in service, Greek life, and intramural sports.
Patrick White is a Sports Studies major from Stow, OH. While in high school, Patrick ran varsity Cross Country and Track and was a multiple- time state qualifier, he also played CYO High School basketball and was a member of the Irish Athletes for Christ. At JCU, Patrick will be a member on the Cross Country and Track teams
Cullen Zarek is a Business major with a Leadership Development minor from Bloomfield Hills, MI. Cullen has played lacrosse his whole life and continues to embrace the sport by coaching his local youth lacrosse team. Cullen is a three time varsity letterman and was a student leader in high school. While he was a student leader, he guided freshmen and sophomores through their first years of high school. Additionally, Cullen participated in many service projects with his school and will be continuing his lacrosse career at JCU.
