Leadership Coursework Accelerates Career Growth for MBA Student

Jennifer Thompson had a career in creative services, but was looking for a change. She hoped to grow into a leadership role, and knew earning an MBA was the first step on that path.

Jennifer studied rankings and convenience, but knew that culture would play a role in her final decision. In choosing John Carroll, she has found the perfect balance. “I didn’t know much about the Jesuit educational philosophy,” Jennifer says. “But I thought it would be a supportive environment, and it turned out to be true.”

She credits that environment with assisting her ascent into leadership at Sherwin-Williams, where she is now Manager of Internal Communications. “At JCU, you are expected to participate and engage in your courses and with your peers,” Jennifer says. “By doing so, you gain not only an in-depth understanding of your studies, but also life skills that will help you succeed in your career.”

Jennifer believes that one lab course in particular sharpened her ability to present herself as a leader. “I use the leadership concepts from Dr. Scott Allen’s course during my daily work and interactions with colleagues at all levels.” “My coursework helped me build a better business vocabulary,” she continues. “I now have a greater awareness of my strengths and weaknesses, which has helped me excel in and out of the workplace.”

Jennifer sees these skills as crucial to success in a business communications career. “Make an effort to become comfortable and confident with networking, public speaking and writing,” she says. “In addition, experience with global management and change management is very relevant in many organizations today.”
